Tarisai Gweje

Tarisai Gweje is a highly innovative contemporary Zimbabwean fashion artist and designer whose avant-garde practice merges the worlds of haute couture and fine art sculpture. Operating primarily out of Harare, Gweje is the creative director behind the label Chaivo Designs. Her work challenges the boundaries of traditional tailoring by transforming ordinary, discarded items into complex, wearable statements of visual language. Central to Gweje’s practice is a commitment to eco-art and upcycling. Rather than relying solely on conventional fabrics, she uses organic items, African Java prints, and non-biodegradable waste materials. She has gained critical acclaim for transforming old rusty metal spoons, wires, and everyday utensils into structured power jackets, bras, and sculptural headpieces. By utilizing discarded fragments, her collections critique consumer waste and redefine what constitutes luxury and clothing in contemporary Africa. Her aesthetic choice of dominant blues and greens, grounded with black outlines, brings a unique, deliberate cohesion to her chaotic structures. Gweje’s boundary-breaking creations occupy a fluid space between high-fashion runways and fine art institutions. Her thematic visual language has earned her exhibition spots in prestigious spaces, including the National Gallery of Zimbabwe with her acclaimed showcase Meeting the Mysterious Age. Her wearable art pieces have also been featured at the Harare International Festival of the Arts (HIFA), the Castle Tankard, and international showcases across Lagos, Nigeria. Additionally, her multi-disciplinary background as a singer with the Chitungwiza Harmony Singers infuses her structural silhouettes with a sense of rhythm, performance, and movement. Ultimately, Gweje’s practice shifts the perception of fashion from simple utility to an eco-conscious, interactive fine art medium.
