The Map of Zimbabwean Art is a living directory of the country's contemporary visual art scene: the artists who make it, the spaces that show, collect, archive and support it, and a glossary of the ideas that run through it.

It is made and maintained by the National Gallery of Zimbabwe as a public resource for curators, researchers, collectors, students and visitors, and for the artists themselves. It is deliberately incomplete: it grows as people contribute, and corrections are welcome.

How it is built

Artists add themselves through a registration form; every entry is verified by the Gallery before it appears. Spaces and glossary terms are maintained by the Gallery's curatorial team, and profiles are updated as new information arrives.

The glossary

Rather than a fixed taxonomy, the glossary is a set of entry points (time periods, media, themes, disciplines, regions and keywords) that cross-link artists and spaces. Choose up to five terms on the home page to see what they bring together.

A note of thanks

The idea of a "dynamic map" of a national art scene follows the Mapa Dinámico del Arte Contemporáneo Argentino, created by the Museo de Arte Moderno de Buenos Aires. We are grateful for that precedent.
