Semina Mpofu

Semina Mpofu is a pioneering Zimbabwean visual artist and stone sculptor whose practice redefines the historically male-dominated field of African stone sculpture. Born in Bulawayo and operating primarily out of Harare, Mpofu’s artistic philosophy is anchored in a positive, proactive ideology that utilizes the aesthetics of bio-morphic abstraction. Rejecting reactive protest, she uses her medium as a constructive tool for social commentary, crafting smooth, rhythmically curved stones that mirror organic life and the natural contours of the human form. Her sculptures function as visual poems, serving as a quiet yet powerful platform to elevate public awareness around culture, the supernatural, environmental stewardship, and the protection of women and children. Instead of confronting patriarchy through aggressive resistance, Mpofu asserts female empowerment and representation through the sheer excellence and unique creative energy of her work. Her mastery lies in blending traditional stone carving with a distinctively modern, fluid aesthetic that avoids rigid geometric patterns. Mpofu’s professional practice spans elite creative hubs and international institutions. Her journey began at the Chinembiri Arts Centre in Mbare, before she refined her signature techniques at Dominic Benhura’s Studios. Today, she balances her studio practice with her role as a full-time visual arts lecturer at the Harare International School, passing on her technical and theoretical knowledge to the next generation of global artists. Her profound impact on contemporary art is highly recognized. She is formally represented in the National Gallery of Zimbabwe's historical retrospectives, has repeatedly won Certificates of Excellence at the Longmans Women Artists Exhibitions, and has taken her practice abroad through prestigious residencies at the Vermont Studio Center in the United States and the Wood Sculpture Symposium in Denmark.
