Tanyse Van Vuuren

Visual artist. Lives and works in Harare, Zimbabwe.

Tanyse Van Vuuren is a contemporary Zimbabwean mixed-media artist and registered creative art therapist whose practice seamlessly bridges raw artistic expression with psychological healing. Based in Harare, Van Vuuren uses her creative space not merely to produce static aesthetics, but to establish a therapeutic sanctuary where complex emotions, personal processes, and structural vulnerabilities are unpacked and navigated. Central to her multi-layered practice is a deeply empathetic exploration of human stories and cultural environments. Having spent formative years studying and working alongside international missions in countries like Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Cambodia, and South Korea, she infuses her visual language with global perspectives and cross-cultural fine art techniques. Locally, her extensive community work in high-density areas around Harare heavily informs her imagery. Rather than adhering to rigid forms, Van Vuuren leverages abstract expressionism through rich mixed-media compositions, using vibrant bursts of color, clay, fluid movements, and texture to capture fleeting emotional moments and process internal trauma. Van Vuuren's creative philosophy is grounded in the belief that true healing often begins beyond the limitations of verbal language. Holding a Diploma in Art Therapy from Australia's College for Educational and Clinical Art Therapy (CECAT), she actively champions clinical art therapy across Zimbabwe to help individuals regulate stress, anxiety, and depression. Her practice thrives within communal networks; she is a resident creator at the Animal Farm Artist Residency in Mount Pleasant, where her collaborative work was featured in the curated group exhibition Intersected Perspectives. Ultimately, Van Vuuren treats art as an ongoing, playful experiment, an essential vehicle for collective restoration that empowers both the artist and the spectator to safely confront their inner worlds.
