Founded in 2014 by the Zimbabwean-born husband-and-wife duo Simba Nyawiri and Dr. Pam Samasuwo-Nyawiri, the brand functions as an intellectual and philanthropic enterprise. It is grounded heavily in Samasuwo-Nyawiri’s pioneering doctoral research into care in design and a strict ethos of Putting People First. Rather than working from rigid, factory-ready templates, Vanhu Vamwe’s creative process is deliberately slow, highly intuitive, and collaborative. Operating primarily between Zimbabwe and Ecuador, the studio partners directly with rural and peri-urban artisans particularly women to revive, preserve, and elevate marginalized regional craft lineages into globally sought-after luxury heirlooms. In Zimbabwe, they established the nation's first structured macramé community, pairing ancient knotting traditions with the technical expertise of the country's finest local wire artists. The resulting tactile sculptures manifest as functional, expressive handbags that double as striking wall-bound installations. Materiality plays a key narrative role in their practice; the structural wireframes are constructed from recycled architectural metals, which are then meticulously knotted over with hundred percent recycled paracord derived from discarded plastic PET bottles, natural sea grass, and vegetable-tanned leathers. Each intricate twist and tassel acts as a visual metaphor for shared human experiences, capturing themes of displacement, belonging, and cultural memory. By successfully positioning hyper-local, handmade African craft within premier global platforms such as their celebrated showcase at the Africa Now pop-up at Galeries Lafayette in Paris Vanhu Vamwe challenges conventional Western definitions of luxury.
